About
Welcome to The Royal Hen—Balboa Island’s best-kept secret. We’re not trying to be trendy or fancy. We just care—about the food, the wine, the people, and the vibe. Our kitchen is small, our menu is tight, and every dish is made with intention. Guests come back for the famous chicken pot pie, the craveable burger, and that feeling you get when you’re known by name. With red iron gates out front and Cynthia (our beloved Boss Hen) inside, we’ve created something rare: a neighborhood bistro that feels like home but tastes like nowhere else. Whether you’re sipping a bold glass of wine under the moonlight or tucking into comfort food with a twist, you’ll feel it—this place is different. Come as you are. Stay as long as you like.

“Live worm in my salad and an unbelievably indifferent response from staff We came here for dinner after finding Royal Hen on the Amex Resy list, and it turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences I've had. I ordered the chicken pot pie, which came with a salad on top. After eating a couple of bites, I noticed a LIVE GREEN WORM actively crawling around in my salad. It was visibly moving around on food I had already started eating. Absolutely disgusting. What made the experience even worse was the restaurant's response. When I alerted our server, he seemed completely unfazed, almost as though this was nothing out of the ordinary. He simply asked if I wanted something else. I told him I'd completely lost my appetite, so he took the dish away. No apparent concern, no explanation, and no meaningful apology or follow-up. They removed the chicken pot pie from our bill, but that was the extent of their response. Nobody came back to check on us or address what had happened. The rest of the food was disappointing as well. The fried zucchini blossom appetizer was heavily breaded, and the citrus salmon came with bland cauliflower sides and what appeared to be canned mandarin oranges on top. Nothing particularly impressive. Finding a live worm in food you've already started eating is bad enough. Having the staff treat it so casually, with no apparent concern for the customer's experience or food hygiene, is even worse. The entire dinner was ruined, and the way the restaurant handled the situation left us with absolutely no confidence in returning. I would strongly advise others to stay away. There are plenty of other places to eat without having to worry about finding a live, crawling worm in your dinner.”

“Nice place with delicious food. Outdoor dining is on the street, so be prepared for people walking next to you all the time. Portions are small and prices are big, it would be better if it was the opposite way. So, if you’re really hungry and don’t want to spend a lot of money, maybe eat at home before going there. Servers were not very friendly, felt like they were too busy.”

“Lovely and cozy place from the 1st glance. Food was disappointing. Caesar salad had wilted lettuce, store bought dressing with small pieces of left over chicken. The worst I ever had. With this execution it should not be on the menu. Chicken pot pie was nice but no salad just a few green leaves as a decoration…”
